Demystifying Secure Access

Being rolled out to all schools and kura across Aotearoa New Zealand, Secure Access is the final phase of the N4L’s Wi-Fi upgrade, providing schools with more control over their networks.

To help demystify Secure Access, our team of experts have created this webinar to provide a detailed overview of the project,  processes and our new Training Hub, Guest Access and Device Registration tools, as well as answer a lot of questions from schools and IT providers.

We’re working through providing Secure Access to all New Zealand schools, with almost 500 schools migrated to date. This webinar will help you prepare for Secure Access so you’re ready when it’s your turn.

Demystifying Secure Access webinar

Check out the video below where our team of experts answer your questions. They break down some of the technical aspects so you can get the most out of Secure Access.

We’d love to get your feedback and any thoughts you had on the session so we can improve in the future. If you could spare a couple of minutes to answer four questions, we’d greatly appreciate it.

Below are responses to five remaining questions we ran out of time to respond during the webinar.

When do you register devices with MAC addresses?

MAC registration is a simple way to enrol wired devices to the school’s network as there is no need to enter a key to complete the enrolment process. Note that most wireless devices DO NOT require MAC information to carry out the enrolment.

Who’s receiving all my school’s emails about Secure Access?

Our School Relationship Manager asks your school’s principal right at the start of the process to nominate the Secure Access contacts, including their IT staff or provider. Our communication is sent out to all school’s nominated contacts.

What about the CO2 monitors that N4L installed? Do they need to be reconfigured?

If a school has IEM devices installed by N4L, there is no need for them to be re-enrolled following the migration to Secure Access and they will keep operating seamlessly.

I’m assuming that a teacher’s device that has been set up in a Secure Access school will be able to hook up to Secure Access under the new system?

If a teacher is using a school-owned device, it will be able to roam to other Secure Access school networks. If they are using a BYOD, they will need to enrol to each school’s network individually.
Any devices connected to a Secure Access pre-December 2024 network will be able to connect to post-January 2024 networks only once they’ve been made compatible with the new system.

Guess Access Plus won't work for all devices, if they don't use the school DNS servers, right?

This is a follow up on the previously answered PaperCut question.
Please remember to discuss the solution design in detail with your assigned IT partner during visit 1 (SOW1) and the pre-config process.
There are usually two scenarios of PaperCut deployment:

  • PaperCut only: PaperCut uses specific ports, which N4L need to allow for ( https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/FirewallPorts/ ), that includes Guest Plus VLAN.
  • PaperCut Mobility Print enabled: it’s highly recommended to configure the mobility print server discovery with known-host (https://www.papercut.com/help/manuals/mobility-print/set-up/configure/discover-printers-known-host/).
