We’re aware that there have been hoax bomb threats sent to multiple New Zealand schools.

Schools that use N4L’s Email Protection service (provided by Proofpoint) may have had this email intercepted and quarantined, however email filtering happens in multiple ways. Emails may also be in the Spam folder of school accounts, such as office or admin, after being blocked by either Google or Microsoft – which N4L has no control or visibility of. It’s also worth noting that N4L security systems are not configured to intentionally block threatening emails sent to schools.

If an email is blocked by N4L’s Email Protection service and placed in quarantine, schools can use the Email Protection tool in MyN4L to view and release it. Emails blocked by Microsoft or Google will be in the account’s Spam folder. Users can regularly check these to monitor blocked emails.

The level of support N4L can provide schools where a user receives a threat email does depend on whether they use our Email Protection service. However, please call our Customer Support team on 0800 LEARNING (0800 532 764) if you’ve received an email threat that you’re concerned about. If a school receives a credible threat of physical harm, the first call should be to the police.
