We are moving to a new outbound Mail Relay platform to ensure schools and kura using it will have their emails reliably delivered and that they continue to be free from spam and viruses.

Any schools or kura using our old outbound Mail Relay won’t need to do anything to access our new service as we’ve automatically moved these schools to our new platform.

If your school or kura is one of these, we recommend you check some of your email settings to ensure you benefit from our Mail Relay – you should check these settings before Friday 23 July 2021.

Configuring SPF DNS records
To help avoid the emails you send being flagged as spam, you should check if your school has a SPF DNS record set up for our Mail Relay. While you’ll still be able to send emails without one, we recommend that you correctly set one up if you haven’t done so already. You can find information on how to do so here.

Checking firewall settings
If you use an additional firewall to N4L’s and/or have an onsite mail server with a software firewall enabled, you may wish to check that the security settings allow the relaying of email via the domain name relay.n4l.co.nz. If you only allow relaying by IP address, these settings will also need to be adjusted as N4L’s Mail Relay IP addresses are changing. You can find all the correct settings for our Mail Relay here.

Schools using third party applications to relay mail
Any schools using third party applications to relay mail, including Kamar or PaperCut, who experience mail relay issues should check they are running the latest version of the application before restarting it. The latest versions for Kamar and PaperCut are:

– Kamar: version 2021.05.(Build 66019)
– PaperCut: version 21.0.1.(Build 56836)
